What to expect
These days we invite you to get to know the famous Icelandic horse in their own surroundings. On your arrival day, we recommend starting out with our Stable combo. The entire family will be introduced to the Icelandic horse, help grooming and ride in the riding hall. The very young ones will be assisted and led by your guide.
The warm and cozy Skeiðvellir Villa will be your home these days. It is placed among the other houses on the farm, right in the middle of the Icelandic landscape, and has everything you need for your stay including a breakfast basket for both days.
Not sure what to do in between your horse experiences? Why not take a look at the map below, where we have putted together our favorite family activities. An afternoon is well spent with visiting the caves of Hella and afterwards enjoying a meal in the city. Another combination could be to stop by the most voluminous waterfall in Iceland on your way to take a bath in the Secret Lagoon. These activities are not a set part of our program, but can be enjoyed on your own just as you prefer. Scroll down to the map and read more by clicking on the pictures.
On your next day at the farm, you can experience the best of Icelandic nature from horseback, when doing our Mountains and Meadows ride. Wrapped up in a warm overall, you can listen to the snow crunch under the horses’ hoofs or enjoy the wide sight length before returning to a hot drink in the cafeteria.

Hella 17 km from Skeiðvellir, 17 mins driving. This small local town offers more than what meets the eye. Here are some of our favorites: Kjarval: Buy groceries and the essentials needed for cooking, a picnic lunch or snacks for the drive. The swimming pool: With a slide, different hot tubs and pools for both children and adult, this is a cozy place to spend an evening or to soften up sore muscles. The wool shop: Buy sweaters, local souvenirs or the pure warm wool from the Icelandic sheep. Food: For a nicer dinner at a fair price the Bistro at Hotel Stracta is our go-to. For a less settled dinner, the hamburgers at the gas station Ólís are our best local tip – they are so much more than just hamburgers. x
Secret lagoon - Gamla lauginn Hvammsvegur, 845 Flúðir: 54 km from Skeidvellir, 43 mins driving. The Secret Lagoon is a natural hot spring located near to Fluðir. The sides are made of big rocks and the water is warm enough for everyone. The Lagoon has changing rooms, showers, snack bar, foam rolls for the kids and stairs to enter the water. Our best tip is to buy the fish and chips from the kiosk at the side. It is a very delicious dinner! |

Caves of Hella Ægissíða 4, 851 Hella. 16,6 km from Skeiðvellir, 13 mins driving. Just outside of Hella, 12 man-made caves have recently been discovered and it is an insight to the hidden underworld of Iceland. Some believe they date back to before the settlement of the Nordic Vikings and 4 of them are now open to the public. With a professional guide you can discover the painting, secret hallways, carved seats and hear about the theories of this mysterious place. An extra plus: children from 0-15 are free of charge! |
x
The Lava Center Austurvegur 14, 860 Hvolsvöllur: 29,5 km from Skeiðvellir, 23 mins driving. In Hvolsvöllur you can find one of the newest and most high-tech museums about Iceland’s volcanos and underground activity. The kids can steer the timeline of Iceland’s development or pin out the volcano they want to hear about. It is small and the exhibition is not to long for the children. There is a café and a souvenir shop in the same building, but our tip is to stop buy the ice cream store ‘Valdís’ a bit down the road for some delicious soft ice. x
Waterfalls Besides the bigger famous waterfalls in Iceland, you can find several undiscovered and beautiful ones in the south. These are some of our favorites and they are all accessible during the wintertime: Árbæjarfoss: Named by a nearby farm and church, this waterfall is appx 10 m tall on the Rangá river. It is easy to walk to, and on a clear day the view of Hekla is the background for this nice waterfall. Urriðafoss: Urriðafoss is the most voluminous waterfall in all of Iceland. It has a nice walking path next to the fall and the river, and even a small picnic table that invites for a cozy lunch or just a seat to enjoy the view. Ægisiðufoss: Hidden a bit outside of the town of Hella, you will find this beautiful waterfall right next to a small parking lot. It can be accessed from two sides: Drive onto road 25 and continue until you see the sign to the waterfall. To see the other side, you have to drive to Hella and then take a turn left (if you are driving on road 1 from west), just after Hotel Stracta. Then continue in the end of the road, turn right and you get to a small parking lot with a bench. |
